June Is Elder Abuse Awareness Month

 

PROCLAMATION

IN THE MATTER OF A PROCLAMATION DECLARING JUNE 2022 AS “ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH” IN MARION COUNTY.

WHEREAS, elder abuse is an injustice that affects as many as one in 10 Americans and has many consequences for Ohio, impacting everything from public health to our economic resources; and

WHEREAS, according to 2018 Census estimates, Ohio has the sixth largest older adult population in the nation and Ohioans age 60 and older make up close to 25 percent of our population; and

WHEREAS, Ohio’s older adult population is growing, not just in size but in diversity, and elder abuse ignores socio-economic status, race, gender, and other factors; and

WHEREAS, more than 80 referrals of elder abuse are received by Adult Protective Services statewide each day involving Ohioans age 60 and older; and

WHEREAS, Marion County Job & Family Services in partnership with Ohio District 5, Area Agency on Aging, Inc., will continue to work with advocates and professionals to increase awareness and help fight elder abuse in order to ensure that our elders are respected as vital members of our community, who continue to grow, thrive, and contribute.

NOW, THEREFORE,  the Board of Marion County Commissioners hereby recognize June 2022 as “ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH” in Marion County and urge all citizens to recognize that our elders deserve to live with dignity in safe and caring communities.
